Graham Gillmore

Vancouver, Canada, 1963. Lives and works in Vancouver.

Gilmore’s painting is, on one hand, a meditation on the creative process and on the other, a description of the act of painting. Gillmore in his paintings combines organic forms with writing that comes from literature, romantic novels, pornographic magazines, pop music written by himself, and fragments of his diary.

The word palimpsest, defined as “a text that keeps traces of a previous text that was partially erased” or “an ancient board were the text could be erased in order to write again”, has been used by Gillmore to define his work. Its an appropriate definition for an artist whose strong point is related to a series of operations on surface where texts and paintings are intersected in continues transmutations from one stratum to the other; articulating paradoxes, or non-sense, in an encapsulated manner or in an anagrammatic disordered.
